Rare Connections is an intimate, poetic feature documentary revealing the humanity behind nuclear science. During the launch of the world-class Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University, varied voices bound by passions, vulnerabilities, and longing blur boundaries between disciplines, communities, and ideas, transforming how they see themselves in relation to science. This rare portrait invites audiences to experience science as an act of love, connection, and art.
Rare Connections is a poetic film about the human side of science, showing how scientists' stories transform the way we see science and ourselves.
Dr. Ágnes Mócsy born in the Transylvania region, is a Brooklyn-based Hungarian American physicist filmmaker exploring the interconnectedness of science, art, and society. With a PhD in theoretical physics and a career as a research scientist, she now crafts documentaries that reframe science as human and creative, sparking curiosity, dismantling stereotypes, and building bridges across disciplines, communities, and ideas. She is Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Pratt Institute, Adjunct at Michigan State University, a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of Yale University.
The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is a cutting-edge research facility dedicated to exploring the fundamental mysteries of the universe. FRIB's primary mission is to produce and study rare isotopes, which are exotic atomic nuclei not commonly found in nature. These isotopes are crucial in advancing our understanding of nuclear physics, astrophysics, and the origin of elements in the cosmos. FRIB plays a pivotal role in unlocking the secrets of the universe by enabling scientists to conduct groundbreaking experiments that address some of the most profound questions in science.
