Rare Connections is a feature-length independent documentary film centered around the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), the state-of-the-art U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility becoming operational in 2022 at Michigan State University (MSU). Using this extraordinary moment in the history of science, the film looks behind the curtain and through the lens of deeply human elements into the world of science, scientists, staff, and the connections of science, arts, and society. Through non-traditional storytelling, this film makes physics and the process of science accessible, showcasing the many diverse journeys and lives in the world of science, and challenging stereotypes as the beginning of a new era of nuclear science and its beneficial impacts to society are unveiled.
Ágnes Mócsy (pronounced Agh-nesh) is a Brooklyn-based Hungarian American filmmaker, professor, physicist. Ágnes received her Ph.D in theoretical physics, and after a successful career as a research scientist she shifted her efforts exploring the interconnectedness of science, the arts, and social justice. Rooted in this she developed non-traditional educational approaches and communication platforms for science communication. She is Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the Pratt Institute, currently on leave as visiting faculty at Michigan State University. Ágnes is an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, Fellow of the American Physical Society, and Yale University Fellow.
The Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) is a cutting-edge research facility dedicated to exploring the fundamental mysteries of the universe. FRIB's primary mission is to produce and study rare isotopes, which are exotic atomic nuclei not commonly found in nature. These isotopes are crucial in advancing our understanding of nuclear physics, astrophysics, and the origin of elements in the cosmos. FRIB plays a pivotal role in unlocking the secrets of the universe by enabling scientists to conduct groundbreaking experiments that address some of the most profound questions in science.
